creativeALBANY is interested in growing Creative Economies; so, what is the creative economy?
Broadly defined, creative industries include engineering, research, architecture, arts & crafts, design, fashion, film, television, music, performing arts, publishing, research, technology and software development, digital media and gaming.
These sectors are the key drivers of economic growth in an age where a shift from manufacturing and service industries is moving the economy to a phase where ideas, creativity and innovation are the key producers of economic differentiation and thus value.
Creative industry people may be the ‘natural resource’ of the 21st century, as they are the originators of ideas. As such, quality of life issues are vital to a community’s ability to attract, retain and grow these assets.
CREATIVE ECONOMY PRINCIPLES:
Invest in the infrastructure that fosters creativity. (i.e. arts and culture, nightlife, the music scene, restaurants, artists and designers, innovators, entrepreneurs, affordable spaces, lively neighborhoods, spirituality, education, density & public spaces.)
Embrace diversity & tolerance.
Support connections between groups.
Value risk-taking. (Challenge conventional wisdom.)
Be authentic. (Resist monoculture and homogeneity, avoid being the clone of another community.)
Invest in and build on quality of place.
Take personal responsibility for change in your community.
Honour the creativity in every person. (support high quality, lifelong education).
